On May 14 through 16, Plan
B will be hosting Bike! Bike!, a gathering in New Orleans,
Louisiana for and about community bike workshops (Read a press
release).
Events will be held at Plan B and The
Green Project. Thanks to the GP for the use of their space.
Who should come? Bike! Bike! is open to anyone who works in or starting up a community
bike workshop, or even is interested in the idea of one. There is no
fee to attend, but please contact us (see below) if you're planning on
showing up.
Okay, what's a community bike workshop?
We're using the term to mean a refer to an organization that maintains
a facility that is used for bicycle repair in some non-commercial sense,
for example: teaching youth or the general public about bike maintenance,
or rebuilding older bikes and making them available cheaply or free.
See the list of participants to the left for some examples.
Workshops/discussion
topics:
We will be discussing lots of topics important to community bike
work, including:
financial
issues (fundraising, accounting, getting by on low/no budget)
community
issues (outreach, combatting sexism, teaching techniques)
Other Activities: Plan B will be hosting a few social events, such as a group
bike ride and a pool party with DJs.
And of course, there's always a lot to see and do in New Orleans,
especially if you're on a bike.
Getting involved: The schedule above is still tentative and, to an extent, flexible.
We've been encouraging attendees to participate in planning how
the weekend goes. People from all over the country have participated
in an e-mail list to discuss what events and workshops they'd like
to see happen in May. You can still get involved in the discussion.
Find out how at the mailing
list info page. Additionally, you can read
the archives of
the list discussion thus far.
Housing:
Plan B volunteers and friends will be providing some free housing
to Bike! Bike! attendees. If you are sure you will be attending
and would like to find out about housing,
